while they’re away

old museum 2015

I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect, but nothing would have prepared me for this moving, thought-provoking and utterly breathtakingly enacted performance.
Silke Ackerman, Director of the Museum of the History of Science

While They’re Away dealt with a wide and rich range of material about Oxford during the First World War, weaving together many strands. I was impressed by the ambition of the project but also its focus on a number of recurring characters, whose simple, human stories and the subtle performances that brought them to life rooted the whole experience and kept it engaging.

The excellent cast, directed by Lizzy McBain, puts the entertaining script over with aplomb, and takes audience interaction in its stride

Mapping Wonderland sits interestingly somewhere between a historical walking tour and a site-responsive performance, feeling at home amongst Oxford’s tourist trade whilst retaining a frisson of adventure…Under Construction’s bold work with spaces has the potential to be richly rewarding.
